If you drive an electric car in Dubai, the green chargers you see in mall car parks, on the street and at petrol stations are almost all part of one network: the DEWA EV Green Charger. It is the backbone of public charging in the city. Here is how it works, what it costs, and how to use one for the first time.

What is the DEWA EV Green Charger?

The EV Green Charger is Dubai Electricity and Water Authority's public charging network — the distinctive green pedestals and fast chargers rolled out across the emirate to support electric vehicles. It covers everything from slower AC chargers for topping up while you shop to DC fast chargers that add serious range in minutes.

Where the chargers are

DEWA has installed EV Green Chargers across Dubai — at shopping malls, government buildings, public car parks, residential communities, hotels and along key roads. Coverage is densest across Bur Dubai, Deira, Jebel Ali and the newer communities, with more added regularly.

What it costs

Public charging on the EV Green Charger network is billed per kWh at the standard public tariff — around AED 0.70 per kWh at the time of writing. That means a typical top-up is inexpensive: adding 30 kWh, roughly 180–200 km of range, costs about AED 21. Charging at home on your domestic DEWA tariff works out cheaper still per kWh, which is why most owners do the bulk of their charging overnight and use public chargers to top up.

Connectors: what your car needs

DEWA's chargers use the same connectors as most EVs sold in the UAE:

• Type 2 — for AC charging (slower, ideal while parked for a few hours).
• CCS2 — the standard DC fast-charging connector for most modern EVs.
• CHAdeMO — DC fast charging for a handful of models such as some older Nissans.

Check which connector your car uses before you go — the map lists the connectors for each station so there are no surprises.

How to charge for the first time

1. Register once through DEWA's EV app or website — you will link a payment method so sessions can be billed automatically.
2. Find a charger on the ChargeAE map and check it is live and free.
3. Park and plug in using the connector that matches your car.
4. Start the session from the DEWA app (or by tapping your registered card at the charger).
5. Unplug when done — on a DC fast charger, stopping around 80% is quickest, since charging slows above that.

AC or DC: which one to use

Use AC chargers when you will be parked a while — at the mall, at work, or overnight — where slower charging is fine and often cheaper on your time. Use DC fast chargers when you need range quickly, such as before or during a longer drive. Matching the charger to the situation is the trick to never waiting around.

Charging at home in Dubai

If you have a dedicated parking space, a home charger is the most convenient and cheapest way to run an EV. You wake up to a full battery every day and rarely need public charging at all. DEWA supports home EV charging on the domestic tariff; a licensed installer sets up a wall box, and from then on the car simply charges overnight.
